Knee Braces product example

A knee brace can support a joint, limit certain movements, or protect an injured or healing structure. The right brace depends on what needs protection and how much movement your clinician wants you to have. A soft sleeve, a hinged brace, and a postoperative brace serve different purposes.

When is a knee brace used?

Your clinician may prescribe one after a ligament or tendon injury, following certain knee procedures, for instability, or for arthritis that affects one side of the joint. Some injuries require the knee to remain straight initially; others call for a controlled amount of bending. The settings and length of use are part of your individual plan.

Types of knee braces

  • Postoperative range-of-motion brace: Long hinged supports with adjustable stops can hold the knee straight or permit a prescribed arc of motion while a repair heals.
  • Knee immobilizer: A straight support that restricts bending for a period specified by the treating clinician.
  • Functional hinged brace: A lower-profile brace designed to support certain ligament-related instability during approved activities.
  • Osteoarthritis unloader brace: Designed to shift some load away from the more affected side of the knee in selected patients.

Fitting and daily use

A Medequip fitter may measure your leg, align the hinges with your knee, adjust the straps, and show you how to put the brace on and remove it. Wear it for the activities and hours your clinician specifies.

Contact us if the brace slides down, twists, rubs, causes persistent redness, or makes your foot numb or unusually cold.

Will a brace replace physical therapy?

No. A brace may protect or support the knee while you follow the walking, exercise, and rehabilitation plan given by your care team.

Insurance: Coverage depends on your plan, diagnosis, procedure, medical-necessity criteria, and documentation. A covered brace category or billing code does not guarantee coverage for your particular case. Medequip can review benefits and discuss estimated patient responsibility before dispensing.
