Bone Growth Stimulators product example

Most fractures and spinal fusions heal through the body’s own repair process. When healing is difficult, or a patient meets specific surgical risk criteria, a clinician may prescribe an external bone growth stimulator as an addition to the treatment plan. Depending on the model, it delivers a low-level electromagnetic, electrical, or ultrasound signal to a targeted area. It does not replace stabilization, activity restrictions, follow-up imaging, or other care.

When might one be used?

Examples include a fracture that has not united as expected, spinal fusion in a patient at increased risk of nonunion, or a fusion that has failed to heal. These are distinct indications, and device and payer criteria differ. A new, normally healing fracture does not automatically call for a stimulator. Your clinician determines whether the diagnosis, imaging, and treatment history support one.

Types of devices

  • Fracture healing stimulator: Positioned around or over the prescribed fracture site for a model-specific treatment session.
  • Spinal fusion stimulator: Worn around the fusion area according to the surgeon’s and manufacturer’s directions.

Using the device at home

Medequip can review positioning, controls, and care instructions for the prescribed model. Follow its treatment schedule, which may require regular use over many weeks or months. Keep follow-up appointments so your treating clinician can assess healing. Contact us if you cannot position the device, it shows an error, or it stops working; ask your clinician about any change to the plan.

Tell the prescribing team about implanted electronic devices, pregnancy, and other relevant conditions before use. Contraindications and precautions vary by model; the device manual and clinical team provide the controlling instructions.

Will my plan pay for it?

Coverage depends on the stimulator type and detailed medical-necessity criteria. Medicare, for example, has specific rules for documented long-bone nonunion and selected spinal fusion situations. A prescription alone does not guarantee approval. Medequip can help review documentation and explain the benefit determination and estimated cost.
